The FDA has approved three artificial sweeteners in moderation for pregnant women: aspartame, acesulfame-K, and sucralose. Diet sodas containing these ingredients can be safely consumed during pregnancy up to twice a day. If the diet soda contains caffeine, keep in mind that a pregnant woman will need to limit herself to 200mg of caffeine a day.

On the Other: Saccharin is Unsafe During Pregnancy

According to dietitian Russell Turk and nutritionist Allison Gamble, saccharin, the ingredient in Sweet'N Low, has been proven to cause birth defects in lab rats. According to Gamble, it has also been proven to cause cancer among lab rats. "That sweetener should be the one avoided while pregnant," Gamble says.

    Bottom Line

There are some diet sodas that are safe during pregnancy, but any containing saccharin, otherwise known as Sweet'N Low, should be avoided while pregnant. However, even though they are safe, there are no nutritional values in diet sodas that would benefit the baby.
