<h4 class="dechead">On One Hand: Tanning oil contains DHA
Tanning oils that give skin a darker color after exposure to the sun contain dihydroxyacetone (DHA). DHA interacts with the outer layer of dead skin cells and creates a chemical reaction, darkening the skin.
On the Other: The effects are limited
Tanning oil effects last up to seven days. The old skin falls off naturally, wearing away the darker skin caused by the oil. Tanning oil with DHA needs to be reapplied on a regular basis to hold the color.
Bottom Line
Only tanning oils containing the effective ingredient, DHA, will work. The color will only hold for seven days, and the oil needs to be reapplied regularly to hold a long-term tan.
