Time Allowed
The Family and Medical Leave Act allows employees to take up to 12 weeks of unpaid time off from work per year.
Benefits
According to the U.S. Department of Labor, those who take time off from work under FMLA have job protection and can maintain their health benefits through their employer.
Reasons to Use FMLA
The Department of Labor allows employees to use FMLA after the birth or adoption of a child, to take care of an immediate family member with a serious illness or for an employee's own medical condition.
Notice
Except in an emergencies, employees must give at least 30 days notice before taking time off under FMLA.
Qualifications for Act
To qualify for FMLA, employees must have worked for their current company for at least one year or 1,250 hours. Companies with fewer than 50 employees are exempt from FMLA.
