  • If you constantly feel overwhelmed by the cost of living in New York, the crowds of people who seem to be everywhere and the chaotic subway rides home after a long day of work, you need to take some time to work on yourself to feel less stressed. Stop coping with stress in unhealthy ways such as smoking, drinking or overeating. You can take charge of your life and reduce your stress while still living in New York.

    Control

The first step in reducing stress in any situation is to know that you're in control of how you react, your emotions and your thoughts. Don't let your emotions and thoughts control you. You have to figure out the root of your stress and how you think about the causes of your stress. Take out a notebook and record the things in New York that make your stress level rise. For example, if you wrote that you're overwhelmed by your long commute on the subway to work and it causes you to be in a bad mood all day, figure out why the long commute causes such negative feelings. How do you think about your commute? If you start every morning dreading your commute to work, you're going to be in an awful mood, but if you start to look forward to your commute by getting a good book to read or listening to your iPod, you'll be able to lower your stress level. If you can't see any way to make the commute better, start taking steps to change it. You could save money to move closer to work, put money towards buying a car or start looking for a new job that's closer to home.

    Give Back

Have you ever noticed that you usually feel happier when you help someone else? According to Whole Living, if you want to prevent stress and be healthier, then you should figure out ways to help others. You don't need to have a lot of time to do this. In fact, you could do one small thing a day such as open the door for someone, let the woman with three children go in front of you at the grocery store or write a complimentary note to a coworker. Even though there are tons of people in New York, many New Yorkers feel lonely. Stay connected to other people by helping strangers, neighbors, coworkers and friends.

    Prevent Stress

Living in New York--especially New York City--can be stressful, but it can also be fun and exciting. Do things that you enjoy doing and that help relieve stress such as going to a Broadway show, taking a bubble bath, reading a good book in your local coffee shop or going to an art museum. Try to do one thing each day that will help you prevent and reduce your stress levels.
