  • For many people who need an Internet connection but who either can't afford the prices for cable Internet or don't want to pay them, DSL connections are a more affordable option; however, DSL does have some prerequisites that have to be met, and there are some circumstances it won't work in.

    DSL

DSL stands for digital subscriber line.

    Copper Lines

DSL connections must use copper phone wires. DSL will not work on wires that use fiber-optic cable.

    Distance

If a home is more than roughly 16,000 feet away from the provider's central office or routing equipment, then the service will not function.

    Multiple Connections

Unless you use a router or other connectivity device at home, DSL will not work properly when several computers are trying to access it at once.

    Function

DSL provides an Internet connection by utilizing the ultrahigh frequencies found in a phone line that people cannot hear. Therefore, if there is something wrong with your phone line, it will also affect your DSL connection.
