The logos of football teams, colleges and famous television characters on apparel we wear are all made possible by screen printing. Screen printing is a premier form of printing that has been developed over hundreds of years. The method of screen printing was first used around 2,000 years ago by the Chinese. Almost 1,000 years later, the first industrial screen printer was created by Samuel Simon, according to Whatisscreenprinting.com. Screen printing is a means of painting that involves using a screen, stencil, and printing medium to transfer an exact image onto another object, like apparel, paper, glass, plastic, and metal. There are three main types of screen printers to fit various demands of manufacturing: industrial, commercial and personal. First, artwork is selected to be printed. From here, a mesh screen is mounted on a frame, cleaned, then prepped with a photo-sensitive emulsion under yellow light. The frame and screen are placed on the desired product, exposed to UV light, coated with ink, then cleaned up. This process is done for each color of the design. The career of screen printer is expected to decline 22 percent from the year 2006 to 2016, according to the United States Bureau of Labor Statistics.
