Family lawyers handle a variety of issues, including prenuptial agreements, divorce, domestic violence, adoption, child custody and support, and juvenile delinquency or addiction.
Function
Family lawyers represent the interests of one member of a family in the case of a divorce or domestic violence, or couples in the case of adoptions or legal issues regarding children.
Features
Family lawyers negotiate arrangements or settlements regarding criminal or financial matters that affect families by dealing with other attorneys or arguing a case at a hearing or trial. Family lawyers also draw up documents that must be signed by a judge or approved by a court of law, such as divorce or adoption paperwork.
Education
A typical family lawyer receives a bachelor's degree in a field such as English or political science, and attends a three-year law school program. After graduation, he must pass the state bar exam before practicing law independently.
Compensation
In November 2009, the average annual salary that family lawyers received for doing their job was $52,000, according to Indeed.com.
