  • Dress shirts are an important asset to business attire. Instead of trying on various shirts to find the best fitting one, a smarter option is to get measured. Dress shirt size numbers reflect simple measurements.

    Neck and Sleeve

Dress shirts are measured by two numbers: The first is the neck size and the second is the sleeve length.

    Body Type

Additionally, dress shirts come in three different fits characterized by body types: athletic, regular and full.

    Finding Neck Size

To find the neck size, measure the largest part of the neck. Neck dress shirt sizes are measured in increments of 1/2 inch.

    Finding Sleeve Length

Start from the knot on the back of the neck and measure across the shoulder, down the extended arm and end at the wrist. Add 1 inch to the measurement to get the sleeve length.

    Body Type Measurement

Measure the waist at where the pants are normally worn. Most shirts are regular fit. Athletic fit is tapered to fit a slim body; a full fit has more room.

    Considerations

If the measurement is between two sizes, always opt for 1/2 inch or 1 inch larger. Dress shirts, even when dry cleaned, have a tendency to shrink a half-inch.
