Ladybugs are a kind of insect that belong to the beetle family. They can be found living both outdoors and inside people's homes. What ladybugs eat when the end up indoors can sometimes be surprising.
First Meal
The first meal for the a newly hatched ladybug larva is often the casing of the egg from which they hatched. Newly hatched ladybugs may also eat other lady bug larva.
Food of Choice
Ladybugs prefer eating aphids, which are small pests that eat plants. A single lady bug may eat up to 50 aphids a day.
Friend to Plants
Ladybugs eat other insects considered pests, such as mites, white flies and scale insects, which has given them the nickname "the gardener's friend" since they will eat pests found on indoor and outdoor plants.
Other Nutrition Sources
Ladybugs have also been known to feed on fungus and mildew. Ladybugs survive on their own body fat when in hibernation.
What They Won't Eat
Ladybugs are not destructive to household items. For example, ladybugs won't eat fabric or paper.
