  • A funeral is a solemn event and your attire should reflect that. When it comes to a funeral it is about respect for the deceased and his or her family members. Black is the most common color for a funeral, but you are not restricted to only wearing black. Depending on the type of funeral or celebration of life, you can wear different outfits. Weather will also be a factor in your outfit choice. The most important thing to do is be respectful to the situation and the family.

    Colors

While black is the most traditional and common color to wear to a funeral, you are not limited to just black. Subdued colors including khaki, white, tans, grays, browns, light blues, light purples or navy are all appropriate color choices for a funeral. It is also acceptable to wear the deceased person's favorite color. In some funerals, or celebrations of life, people even wear shirts with the face of the deceased person being celebrated. It all depends on the type of funeral you are attending. Children should be dressed similarly to the adults.

    Women

Avoid wearing anything tight or revealing. If you want to wear a skirt, keep it knee length or longer. If you want to wear a sleeveless dress. be sure to cover your shoulders with a shawl, cardigan or sweater. Traditionally, a woman will wear a suit or a skirt and blouse. Keep shoes and any accessories, including hats and jewelry, understated as well. If you do wear a hat, it may need to be removed upon entering the ceremony. Do not wear flashy jewelry items, such as large diamond necklaces or a similar piece of jewelry. Subtle and respectful is the look you want to achieve. Do not wear flip flops or non-dress shoes. Make sure the attire is clean and free of wrinkles. Keep weather in mind, as you do not want to be too heavily dressed in hot weather.

    Men

For most men, a black, gray or dark blue suit is comfortable funeral attire. If the funeral is more casual, wear a button-down shirt, a tie and khakis or dress pants. The tie can be dedicated to the deceased, such as yellow if the deceased was military, or pink if the deceased had breast cancer. Men should only wear dress shoes. Make sure all clothing fits appropriately before attending the funeral. Do not wear T-shirts, jeans, baseball caps or sneakers. Keep weather in mind so that you are not wearing a wool suit in the middle of a hot season. Keep any accessories understated and respectful. Stay away from big belt buckles and other large accessories and jewelry.

    Religious Funerals

Some religions treat funerals differently, including the appropriate dress. For example, attire for a Muslim funeral should include very conservative clothing. Although you are not required to wear all black, you should wear a dark color such as black or dark brown. However, if the funeral is in a mosque, then you will most likely need to cover your head.
