<h4 class="dechead">On One Hand: Increasing protein during dieting
According to the WebMD article, "Can a High-Protein Diet Help You Lose Weight," a diet consisting of 30% quality protein will help dieters reduce hunger and therefore better regulate their overall calorie intake. The Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA) of protein for the average women is 46 grams, and 56 grams for men.
On the Other: Not increasing protein during dieting
To get the weight loss benefits of protein, researcher Donald Layman, PhD, a professor at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, suggests bumping the RDA up to 120 grams a day.
Bottom Line
According to an faqs.org article on protein nutrition, there is no need to increase intake of protein for either exercise or weight-loss purposes. Sachiko T. St. Jeor, PhD, R.D., cautions that purposely increasing dietary proteins can lead to an increase in dietary fats, cholesterol and calories. Balance is the key message.
