Concern over greenhouse gases and emissions--as well as preserving supplies of non-renewable resources, such as oil--have led many consumers and businesses to look for alternative fuels to power their vehicles and heat their homes or places of business. Biodiesel is one such alternative fuel that is gaining popularity.
Identification
Biodiesel is el made from vegetable or animal fats or oils, rather than from petroleum.
Use
Biodiesel can be used to power any type of engine or motor that uses regular diesel fuel, such as tractor-trailers and some heaters. There also are kits available to convert traditional cars so they can run on biodiesel fuel.
Benefits
Biodiesel burns clean and contains no sulphur. Because it is produced from organic substances, biodiesel is biodegradable and not toxic, according to the National Biodiesel Board.
Features
Biodiesel sometimes is combined with other types of fuel to create biodiesel blends such as B20, which also can be used in diesel-powered vehicles.
Considerations
When biodiesel fuel is exposed to extremely cold temperatures, wax crystals can form in the fuel, according to the University of Oregon. But this can be overcome by combining additives to the biodiesel.
