  • While it is often hard to pack lightly for a trip, airline restrictions on carry-on luggage and added fees for checked baggage make this a needed skill. Though each airline has its own policy, if you follow these basic guidelines, you will be in the clear.

    Checked Bags

Generally speaking, you can check as many bags as you need, but it will cost you. Many airlines, like U.S. Airways, Continental, Delta and American Airlines, now charge a fee to check even one bag. Southwest allows up to two bags per person to be checked free of charge but charges a fee for more than two bags. Checked bag fees range from $10 to $30 or more. Before flying, call or visit your airline's website to check the exact charge amounts and baggage allowed.

    International Weight Limits

Based on the airline and destination country, the maximum weight allowance for checked luggage can vary. To be absolutely sure you are within an acceptable limit, aim for a suitcase that weighs no more than 50 pounds. A few airlines allow up to 70 pounds. You will be charged extra if your bags are overweight.

    Domestic Weight Limits

Weight limits for domestic flights do not change based upon different destinations, but they do vary among the different airlines; 50 to 70 pounds are generally the limits.

    Carry-on Luggage

Each passenger in generally allowed two pieces of carry-on luggage: a small suitcase or duffel bag as well as a personal item, such as a briefcase, backpack or purse. The safe maximum size for a carry-on suitcase is a 22-by-14-by-9-inch bag, which will fit in overhead bins on the plane.

    Carry-on Restrictions

When it comes to liquids and gels, you must store them in 3.4 oz. or smaller containers. The containers must all fit in a single quart-sized clear, plastic zip-top bag. Only one bag is allowed per person, and it must be removed from your bag and placed in a screening bin. There are exceptions for items like medication, baby formula and breast milk, but you must declare these items to the security personnel. For a list of prohibited items in a carry-on, see Resources.
