  • <h4 class="dechead">On One Hand: How much red wine will help reduce heart disease?

A Nov. 19, 2009, online issue of "Heart" cited a Spanish study that found moderate, long-term drinking decreases the risk of heart disease. This new study addresses the correlation between heart disease prevention and alcohol, raising the questions: "Is red wine good for heart disease? How much is effective?" The Mayo Clinic and the American Heart Association agree that any heart benefits come from moderate alcohol consumption.

On the Other: Does drinking red wine present any risks?

Most doctors agree with the Mayo Clinic's practice of discouraging patients from engaging in drinking as a heart disease preventative. Because alcohol consumption in larger quantities can lead to elevated triglycerides, weight gain and high blood pressure, putting the heart at a greater risk for disease, physicians rarely encourage drinking at all.

    Bottom Line

Alcohol consumption of any kind, whether it's beer, wine or liquor, can just as readily contribute to heart disease as it can contribute to heart health. More significant heart benefits can be achieved through healthy diet and exercise.
