Even the most well maintained computer can have a hardware or software problem. When this happens, one of your options is to contact help desk support, who can be accessed in a number of ways.
Help Desk Basics
If you have purchased a computer from a company like Apple, Dell or HP, it will come with a warranty. Part of this warranty includes customer support, and one method of support is a "help desk."
Contacting Help Desk
A help desk can be contacted in a variety of ways: over the phone, through email, a "live chat" system at the computer manufacturer's website or a discussion forum at that website.
Degrees of Support
Your warranty may only cover a few of the above methods. When purchasing your computer, you can have a variety of support "tiers" to purchase, and you may be able to upgrade after purchase.
Business Environment
In a corporate office, your IT (Information Technology) department will usually take care of your help desk needs, and IT may also consult the company that supplied your office computers.
University
Most institutions of higher education also offer students a computer help desk. It is typically staffed by fellow students, and support is usually free or at least included in your tuition costs.
