  • Many of us look at our stacks, piles or shelves of record albums and see gold. Unfortunately, the vast majority of those records are not golden oldies, but dusty busts---at least from a seller's standpoint.

    Supply

Although your records look like rarities, they probably aren't. Even spiffy-looking box sets from the 1940s or ancient-looking 78s are available somewhere in the marketplace.

    Demand

The problem is that there are relatively few record collectors, and most probably have the records you collected or inherited.

    Exceptions

There are a few rare record albums that sell for more than a few dollars. For instance, if you have the Capitol LP "Yesterday" ... and Today with The Beatles pictured in butcher's coats on the cover, you have "one of the holy grails of record collecting," according to the Record Collectors Guild.

    Sentimental Value

Your records are reminders of past times and absent friends or family, though, so some might be worth keeping around for that reason alone.

    Actual Value

To determine the actual market value, check a record you want to sell on eBay or shopgoodwill.org to see current prices (and whether it sold). In the end, your favorite records might be most valuable for their covers---and memories.
