With the rise in childhood obesity, keeping kids active is an increasing concern for parents. Making sure kids get enough exercise is one important way to help them become healthy adults.
Amount of Exercise
According to KidsHealth.org, kids ages two and up should get at least one hour of exercise every day.
Types of Exercise
Exercises for kids need to focus on endurance, strength and flexibility. Aerobic exercises that increase endurance include basketball, soccer and riding a bike. Climbing monkey bars and doing push-ups help build strength while stretches increase flexibility.
Physical Education in School
For elementary school students, the National Association of State Boards of Education recommends 150 minutes of physical education per week. Middle and high school students should get 225 minutes of physical education per week.
Benefits
Kids who exercise have a lower chance of developing type 2 diabetes and becoming overweight. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, active kids also have higher self-esteem and lower rates of anxiety and depression.
Promoting an Active Lifestyle
The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends parents limit television for kids ages two and up to one to two hours per day. Parents should also stay active themselves to serve as an example for their kids.
