  • "Made in the USA" is a label that is often associated with quality or, at the very least, with patriotism. But you may be surprised to learn that some cars considered imports, including the Honda Civic, are made of parts that were mostly manufactured in the U.S.

    History

In 1992, the American Automobile Labeling Act was passed requiring car makers to tell the government where the products used in their cars and trucks are manufactured and assembled. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the government uses this information to determine what percentage of each vehicle is made in the U.S. and Canada.

    Determining Ratings

The percentage is based on each of the company's car lines and not on individual cars, according to the NHTSA. The AALA uses estimates provided by the car companies of the parts used and how many of each model of a car dline will be sold.

    2009 Rating

The 2009 Honda Civic was rated as being 60 percent made in the U.S. and Canada, according to the AALA report.

    2008 Rating

The 2008 Honda Civic was rated as being 70 percent made in the U.S. and Canada, according to the AALA report.

    2007 Rating

The 2007 Honda Civic was rated as being 55 percent made in the U.S. and Canada, according to the AALA report.
