If you notice that your puppy is starting to develop bald spots or thinning hair, it is easy to panic. However, there are many common, treatable reasons for hair loss in young canines.
Food Allergies
One of the most common causes of hair loss in puppies are allergies. Puppies can develop an allergy to their food, which is the most common cause of hair loss.
Natural Shedding
Puppies naturally lose their puppy coat when they are between 3 and 10 months old. This can cause bald spots and a patchy appearance in the fur.
Illness
In rare cases, puppies can develop hair loss as the result of an illness. Hypothyroidism is an illness that will commonly causes a young canine to lose his fur.
Infections
Fungal infections, such as ringworm, and yeast infections can cause a puppy to lose her fur. If your puppy comes in contact with ringworm spores or is washed with human shampoo, he can develop one of these infections.
Parasites
Skin parasites, such as mites, can cause a puppy to develop mange. Mange is a common parasitic infestation in canines and can cause a puppy to lose hair.
