  • The obvious benefit of a laptop computer is portability. Because they need to be able to run off of a battery, most laptops must sacrifice processor speed and graphics capability. Depending on the expected use, this trade-off can be worthwhile.

    Portability

The selling point of a laptop is that it can be taken anywhere. Work can be done anywhere that you desire. The classic example is working while lounging by the pool.

    Processors

Most laptops use lower-power processors to allow for long battery life. Modern processors can run at higher speeds when plugged in to wall current.

    Graphics

Much like with processors, laptops use low-power graphics processors. While these are not as capable as their desktop cousins for gaming, they are perfectly sufficient for everyday productivity applications like word processing and Internet surfing.

    Hard Drives

Laptops use smaller hard drives than desktop computers. While they have smaller capacities and run at lower speeds, they use little power.

    Specialized Laptops

The biggest advantage of a laptop is that it allows for novel interface designs. Very small laptops known as netbooks can fit inside of a large pocket or a handbag. Netbooks also allow for very low-priced computers, in the $200 to $300 range.
