I'd say you can't change how he acts without talking to him. Of course there are ways you can help him to understand. One possible way is to start slow and romantic and tell him at that point how much you love it when he is slow and caring, and make a point of having a really strong orgasm (I'm sure you can fake it for a good cause). You may well find that he gets quick and rough because he is too sensitive going slow and is worried he will cum too quickly. Many men have issues about pleasing (as they see it) their woman first before they finish. In general, though, you need to communicate much more. If you keep quiet then he thinks he is doing everything right and you're enjoying it all. Letting him know what pleases you, and what he can spend more time doing, will pay dividends for both of you.

Talking about it is the best idea. But I think if you want it slow and romantic and he wants it rough and animalistic, there needs to be compromise; sometimes him giving you the soft and slow and sometimes you giving him hard and fast.
