Because the overabundance isn't spread evenly due to economical problems.

There are countries of over-abundance, but this is certainly not a world of over-abundance.

The hungry people are quiet, and the people who are well-off are making notable quotes.

Because the abundance is not spread out evenly. In some areas there are far more people than natural resources and vice versa. It is up to us to share the wealth. That is easier said than done. In a lot of impoverished places the government is so corrupt that it is nearly impossible to get substantial help to the people who need it most. The most effective way seems to be small organizations doing small things a little at a time. They have to go under the radar in most cases.

Lack of equal distribution I'm afraid.

The main cause of hunger is government corruption. Look at what happened in both Ethiopia and Somalia. In both of those cases the world mobilized to feed those that were suffering from famine. However, those that controlled the port cities through which the supplies had to pass would not allow the food to be moved to the areas of opposing factions. They used the famines as weapons against their enemies. Reports indicate that North Korea keeps failing to produce enough food to feed its people, but won't deal with the rest of the world in an open enough way to allow the necessary food to get in to alleviate their problems. There really is no reason why large numbers of people should starve in this world. We produce more than enough food to feed everyone. The problem is evil men use hunger as a tool to gain and maintain power.
