Alfred Vacheron is credited with the invention of the steering wheel. In 1894, Vacheron participated in the Paris-Rouen-Race. He entered with an 1893 Panhard vehicle, which he fitted with "wheel steering" and dubbed the "Vacheron." Steering wheels replaced tillers in mass vehicle production beginning in 1899 with the Packard. Ten years later, tillers were completely phased out.
