According to carpentry expert Tim Carter, the best cleaner for vinyl siding is simply plain water. Using a regular garden hose equipped with an adjustable nozzle, spray a medium-pressure mist across any area of your siding that needs cleaning. If you need a little more cleaning power, try spritzing on a little vinegar and water. It's best to use a medium mist and not powerful spray, because a high-pressure water stream can penetrate the vinyl.
On the Other: Special Equipment
Some home supply companies claim that their specialized home products will clean your vinyl siding better than any do-it-yourself solution or simple water power. These products include Fantastik, Lestoil, Murphy Oil Soap and Windex. These solutions do clean well, but they also create the problem of chemical runoff into your yard, which can be potentially harmful.
Bottom Line
While specialized cleaning solutions may do the job, there's no proof that they clean vinyl siding more thoroughly than water (or water and vinegar) spray. Also, with the simple cleaning method, there's no chance of poisoning your garden, neighborhood and the environment.
