Prices for roofing felt types have become so close that using a thicker and safer to work on roofing felt simply just makes sense. Most contractors offer an upgrade to 30# for between $70 and $100 per roofing job, and some will absorb that cost themselves to better ensure the safety of their work crew.
Bottom Line
Consider safety and price. There is little price difference between the two primary types of roofing felt materials. Safety concerns should outweigh price concerns in this case. Also consider that the thicker, heavier roofing felt is less likely to tear and allow water to penetrate your roof causing leaks resulting in water damage.
