I stay in the present and I also have a realization that I have responsibilities to myself and others - to earn a living, pay bills, and do my work-job. Even when times are tough, I still know I need to do some basic things to pay the essential bills and also to keep up the standard of living I have. I think motivation comes alot out of necessity and need to do things to reach a goal - even if it is as basic as earn money to eat and buy food and pay bills. I also am motivated due to the way I was raised - taking responsibility for myself and those who are dependent on me also. I rarely need anything other than the desire to continue to do better if I can and at least keep things as good as they are, to motivate myself to do the basic things. Non basic things I can sometimes let the motivation fall and just go back to sleep or be lazy for awhile!
