  • Only in the situation where the talkers brain is idling but their mouth keeps moving. If it is the standard social interaction then no, that is necessary for humans to be able to size each other up.
  • little bit.best thing to do is to walk away.
  • Yes. I have real trouble with it. I'm a silence kinda guy. Inane chattering about nothing can sometimes feel like fingernails down a chalkboard!
  • I love idle chatter. I am actually very good at small talk. The ability to master small talk will separate you from others in interview or sales situations. Anytime you need to impress someone in a passing moment is a sales situation. Everyday I pick up some topical fact or nuetral observation and phrase a question around it. The question should center around the other individual so they can talk about themselves in a positive manner. people will usually talk about themselves for at least two minutes. Until then, the meeting has started, the taxi has arrived or the elevator doors have opened and I say "I've enjoyed speaking with you. My name is David." I usually hold out my hand, get a good shake and get their name. It helps in bidness. Anytime you have to pass the "dead" moments and you can do it by filling in the gap with useless banter that sounds interesting and fun, you will rule the moment and the moments after that.
  • No, it doesn't annoy. What does annoy me is someone who talks AT you and not WITH you. Yapping on and on about themselves and not really wanting to involve you, or cutting you off when you do try to share.
  • It can but I'm good at blocking out such noise.
  • No, only idle questions!!
  • I hate the kind of talk at social functions----you know, the "wine and cheese" sort of gatherings, where snotty people babble on about their empty lives, their cars, their jobs, who they "know", etc. I find that a waste of precious time and energy. I rather talk about helping abused children or animal cruelty---I know that sounds idealistically corny, but it's true.
