About the only way it could've been avoided, would be if the North allowed the South to go their own way.
What is now known as the American West, would've been carved up between North and South. With the north getting primacy. The South would've been inclined to go after Mexican territory.
And in the south, slavery would've ended, eventually. But no where near as quickly as it was in this timeline.
Things would probably be pretty much as they are today. The south would have come back into the union
Slavery was on the way out anyway because of better farming equipment was being produced and the cotton gin required less labour.
I don't think the world today would be much different than it is now. Slavery was dying before the war. It was no longer cost effective to own slaves when the Industrial Revolution was producing things to make farming much more productive.
I agree with Moongrim. The issue of slavery and (eventually) civil rights wouldn't have been forced.
