Is the safety catch on firearms usually on the left hand side of the handle for the right hand thumb?

Yes it is. I almost never use my safety. When I do not want to shoot things I keep my weapon unloaded. I load, shoot what needs to be shot, then unload if there's any ammunition left. The safety does not compensate for people breaking the three rules of gun safety.
