Historically? As valuable or more. In my kitchen...not so valuable. I only use fresh ground Sea Salt and very little at that. Most foods have their own "salt" and are over cooked to the point of needing additional seasoning.

Yes the Spice of life, it is one if the most important minerals and used to be used to pay peoples wages hence the word Salary
