1990 volvo 740 turbo was stalling told to change fuel pump relay didnt work! next told to change fuel pump relay now cat gets red hot and misses should i blow up car now or later?

    No, don't blow it up. I'm not one for condoning pollution...

    Have you ever changed the spark plugs? Fuel filter?

    Check the spark plug wires, etc. You say the 'cat' gets hot. I'm not sure if you made a typo and meant to say 'car' or if you were are referring to the Catalytic Converter. If it's the latter then I'm baffled.

    However, on the assumption that the car is getting hot, check the cooling system. Has the coolant ever been changed? If the temperature guage is going into the red zone then this has nothing to do with the fuel pump relay. Have the coolant changed or, better yet, have the cooling system flushed. In addition, remember that if the temp guage goes to red you must pull over and kill the engine as soon as possible. If you catch it rising before hitting red, then turn the heat on full and turn the fan on full. This will pull heat from the engine and should help.

    Who told you to change the relay?
