New Zealand is launching an anti-smacking law on kids. what are your opinions?

I think New Zealand's government is overstepping its authority on how far into the family its control can spread. It would be interesting to see what did legislators there base it on? Study that the kids are injured physcially and psychologically as a result of smacking? BUT what about the parents' authority to discipline their children? Sometimes there are no reasonable alternative to smacking. Finally, how do you define a "smack" as opposed to "slap" or other forms of contact. I would vote against it.
