There are so many religions out there all proclaiming to be the only true religion. How is one to know which one is the only true religion?

Perhaps there isn't "one true religion?" Perhaps there is more crossover than our poor human minds can concieve of. If you accept just one thing which almost all religions teach, you can hardly go wrong: "Love God with all your heart and mind and strength, and love your neighbor at least as much as you love yourself." : ))

You really can't. So, take your best shot. May I suggest, that when CAREFULLY analyzed, only one really doesn't want to kill everyone else.
