I say those states need to manage better and build bigger prison facilities. It will cost more money in the long run if they let them out and cost the courts more, not to mention risking the safety of decent people in those communities.
-
I think it all depends on the prisoners and their crimes. Not every single person in prison is forever going to be a threat to society although many are.
-
As long as the "right" kind of inmates are released, I'm OK with it. The "right" kind of inmate would be one who was NEVER incarcerated for any crime of violence. This would include bad check passers, embezzlers, counterfeiters, shoplifters, illegal campers, traffic violators and the like. I don't mind having those convicted of non-violent crimes walking amongst us, once again. +5

Tried it in the UK and most re-offended within weeks

I don't care how much money they save, isn't the safety of the community and lives worth it. I don't care if they have 1000 prisons in each state, people should pay for their crimes. How many of those people that get let out will reoffend as soon as they get released? How many citizens will suffer as a result of this. There is plenty of money if they spend it correctly. No college education for prisoners. No Tv, nothing that is unnecessary. Make prisons what they are supposed to be--punishment. Why do you think people reoffend and don't care about going back to prison. Free healthcare, free education, etc. This will only make it worse.

This HAS been going on for a long while.

It's financially impossible for society to continue paying for inmates "stay". They have got to come up with a plan to make prisoners work to produce something that can be sold or exported to pay their own way. Many choose prison because it's a "free ride" and they're too freakin lazy to work for food. They aren't made to contribute to society, yet working people pay over $70,000,000,000 (70 billion) to clothe, feed, & house them every year.
-
I think they should house them in the houses of the various legislators until the legislators can manage to come up with money to build more prisons.

It seems they have no choice but to do so with the economy the way it is. The problem is not looking at the cause of people in prison and why for some it is a revolving door.If a prison is used only for incarceration only than there will always be prisoners to fill them.If rehabilitation takes place with social workers and each and every prisoner has to go through counciling at least 20 hours a week, and constructive training in a profession is also added then prisons are not serving their purpose.I am sure repeat offenders percentage will be 20%.
-
Either free them or execute them. Personally, execution works for me. But not everybody is as cold blooded as I am.
-
I do not agree with it I believe that they should be made to earn their keep. In this country a murderer can do as little as 6-8 years of what is supposed to be a life sentence. and now that the EU can determine the civil liberties and reverse laws maybe we will eventually pay them for the time they are in prison. I am sick of prison reforms always being in favour of the criminal and anti the public who usually become their victims in some way shape or form. If they want to reform something reform the work policies let them become the Wests cheap Labour instead of us taking advantage of children and women working in sweat shops in third world countries. Yes it may effect the third world economy but it would affect the Wests economy too and at the moment it is the Western worlds economy that needs to catch up with the East.

I'd say it's ok if they aren't a threat to society and have good records of their stay in prison. And they should have restrictions when they come out. This may give prisoners more incentives to behave well while they are in prison. I guess we don't have much choice to keep all of them in if we don't have the money to support them.
-
It seems to me that our illustrious leaders should find "other" places to cut costs rather than release prisoners. The government's job, whether federal, state, or county, is to protect it's citizens whom they work for. This is just one more example of why we should wipe the slate clean of these do-nothings. That's BOTH parties, by the way.

Of all of the jobs the Republicans have exported over the years, why can't we export some convicts too?

Time to invest in an Uzi and a couple guard dogs.
