Common sense. Proper training. Every state is different according to the laws, usually you have to pass a background test, before you can own a gun. If you have a felony, forget about getting one it'll probably never happen.

You do not say where you are from. . The rules will vary very much from jurisdiction to jurisdiction. . Why not go to a sporting goods store where you might buy your gun. I am sure they can tell you what the rules are and where to apply for a license if needed in your area. . Many areas now also require gun safety courses before you are allowed to buy. These may be organized by the agency responsible for licensing OR may be offered by your sporting goods store.
