When you talk about automobile design you can be referring to two different things: Concept Design and Industrial Design. If you talk about Concept Design, then it regards to the graphic part only. For this matter you can use any 2D or 3D design software or a combination of both. Better known 2D are probably PhotoShop and PaintShopPro. Better known 3D are probably Maya, 3DStudioMax and CAD Applications. If you talk about industrial design, then is a totally different and much more complex area. You will need custom 3D design software, which are not only used for the exteriors, but for interiors, engineering and general mechanical aspects of car. I would say that only car manufacturers own this kind of software. Good luck!

We play video games that teach us to drive. Just kidding. IT and virtual modeling have taken the manufacture of everything to a new level. Used to, a 2d CAD drawing was used to create concept and manufacture tooling. But once the car was made, thats when you really found out how it would perform, This type of roadtesting is very expensive and time consuming. Now, a concept vehicle can be completely produced and road tested before one piece of metal is cut. It's comprable to a virtual reality roadtest. The computer can actually replicate every variable a real car would experience, test drive the car in those conditions, and make corrections in a matter of hours. Dailmer Chrysler is a pioneer at this. This is why prototype to production can happen in 4 months now instead of 36.
