  • I would suggest that its common description is no reflection on cost. It would primarily be due to the alcohol content (some grappa's can contain more alcohol than vodka's), and would be a reflection of the processing needed to make grappa. Since it is made from grape pressings, the seasonal vagaries that affect wine-making also would affect the production of grappa.
  • Grappa was called the common man's drink because, it was the last thing made after the grapes had been turned into wine. While the workers waited for fermentation to take place, they made this cheap and STRONG "liquore" from the stalks of the grapes, which were literally thrown away otherwise...but now, of course, it has been recognised as a money spinner and so it is UP with the price...
