They are extremely well-mannered and polite. At least mine was.

I saw one yesterday at an adoption fair. He was the most beautiful and affectionate little boy. He has a bushy, I mean really bushy tail and sweet little wisps of hair growing out of his ears. After I talked to him for a bit, a young couple who had 3 Maine Coons came by to look at him. They were moving to a new home in a few weeks and were not sure if they could bring him into their current apartment. I volunteered to foster their cat for the next several weeks until they moved. They called a relative who was willing to host the cat for the next few weeks. If it doesn't work out, they have my number and I will be happy to do it. This cat had short whiskers that curled down, he was beautiful and so loving too, he was sucking on his new "mommy's" ears.

Main Coons are very playful but not exactly known as lap cats. They like to be near you but not necessarily ON you. They love to use their paws to touch you and play with things. They really are like little hands. And those hands paired with that smarty brain can get them into trouble because they are a big furry bag of curiosity. They will open doors and drawers, and carry things around the house to hide them. But the are easy going, not demanding. If you're home, they spend time giving you a hand:-) If not, they'll keep themselves company.

I think it's their dispositions. My sister has one that she adopted and he is without doubt THE most affectionate cat I have ever been around. He will let you do anything with him and when she first got him, he would lay in her arms and suck on a baby bottle!

I've had two Main Coons. My first one was MY BEST FRIEND. He was such a good guy. He would alert me to trouble for instance, one evening I returned home and he came running out of the office meowing at me. He kept running to me and to the door of my office. When I went into the office I discovered that a ball had crashed through the window while I was out. Another time I was being scratched up by a frantic cat that I was holding and my Main Coon leaped through the air and tackled the cat that was freaking out in my arms. He protected me!! I have a ton of stories like that of great and extraordinary things that my Main Coon did. Sadly, my friend passed away. I was so heartbroken over the loss that I eventually got on a list with a Main Coon breeder. Now I have my second Main Coon and although he's different he's just as wonderful as my first Main Coon friend was. You can't go wrong with a Main Coon.

They can be lap cats and very affectionate. many cat breeds are aloof and interact when they feel like it. Not so with the Coon. The Coon can demand your attention and will willfully act out when denied. They are extremely intelligent and have long memories. Therefore be careful with discipline because they don't forget poor treatment. They like to be boss of the pride so if you have another cat that is smaller, watch carefully that the smaller cat gets food and water because the Coon can be a bully at the water/food bowl.
