The vocal folds are sometimes called 'true vocal folds' to distinguish them from the false vocal folds. These are a pair of thick folds of mucous membrane. They sit directly above the true vocal folds, to protect them. The false folds are also called vestibular folds and ventricular folds. Unlike the true vocal chords, the false ones grow back completely when they are removed by surgery.

I have bilateral vocal cord paralysis..Everyone has true and false cords..true are the inner cords that produce phonation and cover the windpipe. Mine was caused by surgical error and couldn't be fixed..Only treated with a tracheostomy. There is a clinical trial in Ohio offering reinnervation with a pacemaker. That is something real that could help us with paralyzed vocal cords some day. If you ever have questions about this stuff..ask me I live it daily..
