Why does wikipedia ask for donations?

Because there are lots of costs that go into maintaining a website. Registering is just the beginning. They also have to pay for hosting the website and as you can imagine they get a lot of traffic and therefor hosting fees are high. There is also the problem with security and anyone has the ability to add/edit an article on the site and therefor they also have to pay to have that system monitored and protected.
