Is it true that in the Qur'an in sura 5:38, Islamic law requires the severing of hands of thieves who steal more than a quarter of a dinar value of goods? Isn't that too cruel and barbaric?

no it's not barbaric...it's the god wisedom

this is the only solution to protect your money and your life .. i love this nice verse that god explain why he order us to (kill who kill and cut the hand that steal)

2:179 ((And there is (a saving of) life for you in Al-Qisas (the Law of Equality in punishment), O men of understanding, that you may become Al-Muttaqun (the pious - see V.2:2)))

the verse in Arabic is mush nicer .. it's written in the way like if i say ( you have a life in killing ) .. (you have a ..... in anti ....)

becuae if we know that the punishment will be cutting our hand .. no body will steal .. no boey will kill

Yes extreme punishment for minor crimes does put people off...commiting minor crimes. It also makes you a tyrant.

It also leaves a person with no hands, no hope to change his life for the better and also pissed off at the people who took his hands. Never a good thing for a society to generate.

And the idea that; "but it works!" is called the slippery slope of "The ends justify the means". Which, in these situations, always carries a cost somewhere else in the society.

It sure as hell keeps a lot of people from doing it. Did you know that many shops are left wide open in Saudi Arabia without fear of property being stolen? Everything shuts down during prayers so a lot of stuff is just left standing. It seems a bit barbaric but it puts out a strong message and it is very effective. Also did you know that they still do beheadings in Saudi Arabia? They just had one on the news recently for practicing witchcraft. Seriously, look it up.
