No, it is not illegal but the Communists scare of 50 years or so ago still lingers. Most people also fear socialists because they don't understand them. Interesting that many of our friendly countries in Europe are so minded.

No it is not illegal to be a communist / socialist in the USA. It is however illegal to prevent or other wise harass someone because they are. Tyranny can come from anywhere, from either side and its roots have many forms. This is why the First Amendment defends the message and the messenger without exception. But it will never defend violence or harm to another person.
