They're different formats. The DVD-r are usually for movies or video. The CD's are for audio.

The difference between a dvd-r and a cd (compact disk) is the storage capacity. Either can be used for music or text storage. A dvd can hold about 4.7GB while a cd can hold about 700mg. A cd-rw can be written over about one thousand times while a cd-r can only be written on one time. The same is true for a dvd-r. DVD-R means one time and a DVD-RW means it can be written over 1000 times. RW means rewrite.

CDs are like records. They have little tracks in them, like the grooves in records. Except that the tracks in CDs are immensely thin. This allows a CD to hold a lot of information, about 80min of music/video and 703MB of data. DVDs are the same, except the tracks are even thinner, which allow you to store up to 4.5GB of data (I'm not sure about the music/video stats). But when you get down to it, they're both pretty much a piece of plastic with reflective tape.
