Prayer, regardless of who your praying to is (at least the way I see it) an unburdening or sorts. So even if you're not expecting your prayer to be miraculously answered, its like a nice mental tidy-up. I sometimes pray at bed time to get things off of my chest and out of my head so I can sleep (in addition to the religious obligation of prayer). I find it helpful to pray a prayer of thanksgiving before I launch into the negative stuff because it helps me put my needs in perspective.

To give thanks for all that God has done for me, to ask for His blessing for myself and more importantly for my many friends who need His blessing in someway or another. There are thousands of reason for me to pray to God, today I am praying to Him by thanking Him for sacrificing His only Son to die a brutal death on the cross, so that I could have a relationship with God through Jesus. He is awesome!! I am very greatful to both of them for their love and sacrifice. In His grasp, <:))))<>< "Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good." Romans 12:21

To fulfill a need to converse with a higher consciousness.

By praying you open yourself up to God and basically invite Him to work in your life and to use to work in the lives of others. Praying often will also make it easier for you to hear God's voice. Together with praying you do need to read the bible and attend some kind of congregation as that will strengthen you in your religion. i found a site that talks about praying and why we pray and what to pray about which helped me a lot. go have a look if you are interested, don't if you're not but it will definately shine a bit of light on this issue! http://howtopray.theopenprayer.com/ http://pray.theopenprayer.com/

Prayer is the elevation of the mind and heart to God: + In praise of his glory + In petition for some desired good + In thanksgiving for a good received + In intercession for others before God Through prayer the Christian experiences a communion with God through Christ in the Church. "For me, prayer is a surge of the heart; it is a simple look turned toward heaven, it is a cry of recognition and of love, embracing both trial and joy." (St. Thérèse of Lisieux) "Prayer is the raising of one's mind and heart to God or the requesting of good things from God." (St. John Damascene) But when we pray, do we speak from the height of our pride and will, or "out of the depths" of a humble and contrite heart? (Psalm 130:1) He who humbles himself will be exalted; humility is the foundation of prayer. Only when we humbly acknowledge that "we do not know how to pray as we ought," are we ready to receive freely the gift of prayer. "Man is a beggar before God."
