  • There is probably bedrock or some other solid rock surface under the sand as the case with most sub terrainian surfaces on the earth. The actual depth of the sand is about 200 to 250 feet on average although it tends to vary through out the desert.
  • In 1981 the Space Shuttle Columbia took a high-res snapshot in infa-red of the Sahara. The resulting image revealed mountains and river valleys underneath. Only a few meters under the surface, the hidden 'old body' of the Sahara was from around 35 million years ago when the area was a fertile savanna Over time small changes in the global climate meant that life there just withered and died.
