Because a lot of people can't accept a difference of opinions.
It is practically impossible to be objective on the subject. Humans are designed to do what is to our greatest benefit, whether through evil or good means. Politics are about as a basic to what our core reason for being is, so to use deception, insults, and worse becomes justified if we think it is for the better good. Wouldn't anyone lie, etc. if it were for a cause so worthy as to be more important than anything else?
Because a lot of folks bring religion into the mix.
And religion has a way of turning off a person's better judgment.
