Does the British monarchy still have a place in today's society? Isn't the Royal Family now more famous for its celebrity than for its symbolic appeal to sovereignty and tradition?

My husband is British, and his family views the Queen as a figure head now. Not sure how popular THAT idea is...But I also have wondered if the Monarchy has a place in todays society. I think the Queen Margaret of Denmark may have more direct impact on the Danish than Queen Elizabeth on the British.

I have always been of a Republican point of view, i don't believe in this day and age, that a certain family - (in this case the Windsors) should have a heriditary right to be the head of this country. It is ultimately unfair. I'm not suggesting a Russian revolution, they can keep most of what they have, but i would like us to have a Presidential head of state rather then a monarch. Ultimately, at present, the Monarch still has a political role, but this is used in a symbolic rather then a practical capacity.
