Heh! In submarining, it's a specified depth, down to whatever the design test depth of the submarine. When at Periscope Depth (PD), "Emergency Deep" is an order which directs a specific sequence of responses from the crew with the purpose of getting the ship down to 150 feet as rapidly as possible. This is because coming to PD is perhaps the most dangerous of all routine evolutions performed by submarines and the ship is using all of it's capabilities to ensure there are no surface ships in the area that they may have a collision with. When coming to PD, the OOD (Officer of the Deck) is on the periscope and is CONSTANTLY revolving as the ship comes shallow. At the first sign that there is a ship in the area, he will order "EMERGENCY DEEP!" and the crew in Control will immediately go to full dive and take the ship down to 150 feet and level out. The term "take her deep", however, has another meaning. In modern submarine warfare, this isn't an actual order. Change of depth orders, with the exception of "Emergency Deep" ALWAYS come with a specified depth. This is because the tactical situation changes all the time for a variety of reasons. Changes in salinity with depth, changes in temperature with depth, depth of the waters your are operating in, underwater mountain ranges, and more affect not only how deep you CAN go, but how deep you WANT to go. With submarines, escaping detection and evading attack is more than simply outrunning the enemy or getting out of range. It's using the local environment to provide accoustic cover which will cause the enemy, or his weapons, to lose contact with you long enough for you to establish a course, depth, speed, and distance which will maintain a permanent break in that contact. Think of it as playing hide-and-seek in the dark and spotting someone. The person who was found can either attempt to outrun you, OR he can break visual contact with you long enough to find a new hiding place before you spot him again. Pretty deep, huh?
