The Romance languages are those based on the Latin language. It is their "substratum". This group of Indo-European languages is represented by many languages, including Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, Romanian, French, Catalan, etc. "Rapid fire" is referred to their energy and speed. For instance, Spanish is much faster than English.
As Carl V used to say, you should speak Spanish when you're addressing the God, and French when you are thinking of love; but you should speak English to discuss your business.
