96 corolla i try to start the engine and it just does a clank battery is good it sounds as though its coming from top backside of engine

Two things come to mind.. #1 A bad starter. The solenoid is engaging, making the clank but the starter motor is not turning. Not difficult to fix. 250-350 USD parts and labor. #2 The engine is seized. The starter cant turn the engine. To check, see if you can turn over the engine with a breaker bar on the crank pully. Would mean the engine is shot and needs to be rebuilt or replaced. Hope for #1
